Platform Self-Service, Templates & Integration
Author the templates and integrations for a platform self-service portal with Backstage! Create software templates that scaffold FastAPI microservices, configure GitHub integration for repository management, connect to Kubernetes for cluster visibility, link monitoring dashboards, and configure authentication and RBAC. Set up TaskFlow as a self-service platform!
Lab Overview
🛠 Lab from the Platform Engineering Bootcamp. Used in Week 13. Bootcamp landing page: https://academy.tekanaid.com/bootcamps/platform-engineering-bootcamp Parent course(s):
- Week 13: Backstage: Internal Developer Portal (slug: backstage-developer-portal)
🟡 Beta bootcamp lab. Hands-on instructions, check scripts, and solve scripts are in place. Lab is part of the running TaskFlow project that grows across all 21 weeks of the bootcamp.
Create Backstage software templates for platform automation and configure integrations with GitHub, Kubernetes, and monitoring tools. Author self-service workflow definitions that generate code, create repositories, and set up CI/CD pipelines when run by a live Backstage instance. Build the "New FastAPI Microservice" template that scaffolds complete projects with best practices built-in.
You'll write template.yaml definitions with parameters and actions, create skeleton/ directories with template files, use fetch:template, publish:github, and catalog:register actions, integrate Backstage with GitHub for repository visibility, connect to Kubernetes for pod status, link to Prometheus and Grafana dashboards, set up authentication with GitHub OAuth, configure RBAC for team permissions, and build a complete developer portal for TaskFlow platform.
