Lab Overview

This is the hands-on lab for Section 13 of the Boundary 101 course. Setup already deployed the Lab 3 split: a Boundary Community Edition 0.21.3 controller with PostgreSQL-16 on boundary-controller, and a registered worker with a TCP target on boundary-worker. You do not deploy the cluster. You do not run boundary dev. You operate a cluster that is already up.

You will:

  • Add an events stanza to controller HCL with stderr and file sinks, restart

the controller, then generate authentication and session events

  • Hit GET /health on the ops listener at port 9203 (not the API on 9200)
  • pg_dump the Boundary PostgreSQL-16 database, stop the controller, drop the

database, restore the dump with the same KMS keys, and confirm /health

  • Authenticate again and reconnect a TCP session through the worker (or list

workers and targets as healthy)

Community Edition disaster recovery is dump and restore plus the KMS keys that wrapped the dump. Do not run boundary database init on a restored database. Debug mode is Enterprise and HCP. Do not enable it. This is not a Grafana lab. /metrics on 9203 is optional.

What You'll Learn

Enable file and stderr event sinks on a self-managed controller and generate authentication and session events

Probe GET /health on the ops listener at port 9203 and recognize 200 as a healthy controller API

Dump Boundary's PostgreSQL-16 database with pg_dump before breaking the database

Restore the dump with controllers stopped and the same KMS keys, without running database init

Prove the cluster returned by authenticating and reconnecting a TCP session through the registered worker

Prerequisites

Completion of the Boundary 101 Section 13 (Observability and Day-2 Operations) lessons

Familiarity with the Lab 3 self-managed controller and worker split
